Sure, in terms of that plot it's pretty slender, but the unique presentation and deeper themes really make this one special. It's also got the exact kind of Doctor Who cheesiness, a villain made of sleep dust, mixed with genuinely interesting elements that elevate them as villains (when really they're not much more than the time zombies from Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS in raw plot terms). They're the discarded elements of human nature, everything unclean we want to purge about ourselves, rising up to take their revenge at being neglected. I even like the sleep gunk monsters (sandmen, brilliant name).

There's no free time, no escape from being watched or having to perform. With no time to sleep, work time is maximised. Those themes of observation and constant monitoring feed back into the whole 'sleep' plot. It's a subtle thing that rewards the attentive viewer. Then the twist about halfway through that Clara's also become a POV character, and that there are no cameras whatsoever, makes it even more interesting.

The lack of non-diegetic music also works in this direction, making the episode feel as much as possible that it's a 'real video file' that we're watching. The found-footage style contributes a huge amount to lending the episode an unique atmosphere of direct participation in the action, so when the horror moments come, it feels much more effective than Who's usual brand of fear. I actually really came around on Sleep No More the last time I watched it.

While Sleep No More is a near-complete failure, ultimately it just ends up feeling like an overly long Inside No.9 episode, that outstays its welcome by about the halfway mark, tumbling into a deep deep sleep. Still, I can’t think of another episode of this show that plays with narrative expectations to such a degree. Great stuff, just wrapped in a confused story. Sleep No More succeeds at being something interesting to talk about, however I like how there’s a brief implication that Clara is pushing herself beyond human limits to keep up with The Doctor, and how the sci-fi setting shown in this episode is just thrown at us with no explanation (lots of terms like “The Great Catastrophe” are lobbed about) some of the cast show promise but ultimately are given nothing to work with, and I do think the Sandmen are a classic Doctor Who-esque idea like exploding bubblewrap in Kerblam!.

I rewatched this episode because I feel like I have an obligation to sit through even the worst episode of the show, but if I wasn’t so inclined I don’t think Sleep No More would have even succeeded at it’s second narrative I’d’ve merely switched the TV off before I got infected. The second narrative is what Rasmussen is trying to concoct via editing these vague scenes together the second narrative is that there is no narrative, and that the entire episode is designed to confuse viewers into keeping them engaged, so that they can be infected by the Morpheus signal. There are two narratives that play during Sleep No More the first is the most apparent narrative the story of a group of soldiers going on a rescue mission into an abandoned space station when they bump into The Doctor and Clara, who then lead the crew on some daring chase sequences to find the origin of the mysterious “Sandmen” – this narrative makes no sense, 12 even continuously acknowledges it. Not much makes sense here, but that’s because you’re focusing on the wrong narrative. Reece Shearsmith is at least here, one of my favourite actors/writers working at the moment (who needs to write for Who alongside Steve Pemberton), but I think he’s fairly overshadowed by the bizarreness of the script. So, yeah, this is a genuinely bizarre creative project from Mark Gatiss, and not a very successful one, but I’ll always applaud an interesting failure over a successful slice of boredom. This has more in common with the interactive Attack Of The Graske than anything resembling The Blair Witch Project. It’s not content enough to be “Doctor Who does found footage” but instead feels a bit like one 45 minute video-game cutscene characters’ personality traits, wherever present, are usually introduced to us via Top Trumps fact-files, and while I think there is an admirable effort to make the episode feel real, the camera movements are just slightly too stilted and awkward to feel genuine. While I previously rated all 166 episodes as “how good they are at being Doctor Who”, I will now be rating them as “how good they are as TV”. This is a reboot of a series of DWR (Doctor Who Reviews) I posted from May 2019 to October 2019, also including episodes during Series 12’s air-date.
